Who are we?

BREAD AUSTRALIA is a faith-motivated humanitarian agency dedicated to serving vulnerable communities. Working in partnership with Australian businesses and individuals, we focus on initiatives that seek to improve the lives of oppressed and marginalised minorities.

What do we do?

BREAD Australia works in partnership with local organisations in food-insecure countries to ensure farmers’ gifts of high-protein grains–lentils, chickpeas and wheat reach communities suffering amid the global food crisis.

Bread in Action

Our most recent shipment was a generous donation of 23.5 tonnes of lentils from Dick and Cathy Nicholls, a farming couple from South Australia. This shipment was successfully sent from Southern Australia to Matabeleland in Southern Zimbabwe, where was successfully distributed through 46 churches in the area, giving 335,715 meal portions served!

Robust logistics – the delivery, the people

A critical part of the success of BREAD is effective logistics. To meet the need, BREAD has developed robust logistical supply chains. As a case study and relevant example, the lentils mentioned above began their journey in Port Adelaide in February 2023, where they were packed into a container and sailed to Sri Lanka aboard the ship, the Conti Cortesia. At a short layover in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the lentils were transferred to another ship. They then made their way to the South African port city of Durban, arriving in April 2023. Here BREAD’s partners loaded them onto an overland train bound for Zimbabwe. They made the final step of their journey by train to Bulawayo, where the lentils were unloaded and distributed to rural churches in the region in May 2023, who then took the lentils to homes, by human power, by wheelbarrow and by donkey cart!

Farmers can make donations to BREAD Australia through the National Grower Registration (NGR) card scheme, recognised by bulk-handlers. Contributions of grain, including APW or ASW grade grain, can be made when delivering to any of Viterra sites during harvest. Viterra will then work with the charity to consolidate the grain to be out-turned at Port Adelaide, ready for export.

Farmers can make donations directly to BREAD’s NGR account #1501 0105 by contacting the BREAD head office at 117 King William Street, Adelaide on 1300 365 799 or info@breadprojects.org. Grain that is already warehoused in Viterra bulk handling facilities can be donated using the Grower-to-Grower form available from Viterra Grower Services on 1800 018 205.

Any gift of grain or money to BREAD Australia is a tax-deductible donation. Donations of AU $2 or more to the work of the Barnabas Relief Education And Development Ltd ABN 12 151 203 691 are tax deductible
