South Australian Lentil farmers Dick and Cathy Nicholls are urging South Australian grain growers to support an innovative new scheme to feed the world’s poor in Asia, in Africa and in the Middle East. They are backing BREAD* Australia, a faith motivated humanitarian agency and registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-Profit Commission (ACNC), in its campaign to ship surplus grain donated by farmers to feed the world.  People like Impoverished “Daoud”[1] and his wife who live in Southern Jordan – an area blighted by years of drought. They recently received a 20kg bag of chickpeas from Australian farmers which provided their four children with meals of high-quality plant protein.

BREAD Australia works in partnership with local organisations in food-insecure countries to ensure farmers’ gifts of high-protein grains–lentils, chickpeas and wheat–reach communities suffering amid the global food crisis.

This Iraqi boy was among many child refugees sheltering in Jordan who received a 5kg bag of chickpeas donated to BREAD by an Australian farmer

Farmers can make donations to BREAD Australia through the National Grower Registration (NGR) card scheme, recognised by bulk-handlers.  Contributions of grain, including APW or ASW grade grain, can be made when delivering to any of Viterra sites during harvest.  Viterra will then work with the charity to consolidate the  grain to be out-turned at Port Adelaide, ready for export.

Farmers can make donations directly to BREAD’s NGR account #1501 0105 by contacting the BREAD head office at 117 King William Street, Adelaide on 1300 365 799 or info@breadprojects.org. Grain that is already warehoused in Viterra bulk handling facilities can be donated using the Grower-to-Grower form available from Viterra Grower Services on 1800 018 205.

Any gift of grain or money to BREAD Australia is a tax-deductible donation.
